Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women worldwide, roughly 180 million people, making it one of the most common yet often misunderstood women’s health conditions. The disorder occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus, causing chronic pain, fatigue, digestive issues, and infertility. It also has a profound impact on mental health, education, and careers. Despite its prevalence, endometriosis remains underfunded and under-researched, with diagnosis taking an average of seven and a half years.

W I T H I N, a photography series by Ester Keate presented by Club10, captures the real-life experiences of women living with endometriosis. Through intimate portraits, Ester highlights both the vulnerability and resilience of her subjects. The women are photographed nude on soft white plinths, reminiscent of bandages, symbolising strength and the sense of loss often felt by sufferers. Close-up images of surgical scars, the only visible sign of endometriosis, represent the physical and emotional impact of this invisible illness.

Endometriosis is frequently described as an invisible illness because many of its symptoms are not outwardly visible. Many women undergo repeated laparoscopic surgeries, yet the mental and emotional toll of chronic pain, infertility, and years of medical misunderstanding often persists. Through this series, Ester Keate, in collaboration with Club10, gives visibility to these experiences and sheds light on the challenges faced by women living with endometriosis.
